Oak Graining Tools

Faux oak is easier to achieve with the right tools.  We have made it easier to find everything you need with this oak woodgraining how-to.  Pierre Finkelstein of Pierre Finkelstein Institute of Decorative Painting will show you how he uses these tools.  See also: oak wood

Using Metal Combs for straight graining while creating your faux oak woodgraining. Hold your combs with the Drummer’s Hold or “Quack motion.”

Sketching the heart grain with burlap.  You must condition your burlap before using (give it a bath of water and acrylic medium and let dry – repeat 2-3 times).  Otherwise, the burlap will shed fibers on to your painted surface.

Using a Detailing Brush and Metal Oak Graining Combs for defining and finishing the heart grain.

Billiard cloth plus a long thumbnail make a perfect tool for producing the silver flakes on quarter-sawn oak.

A size 100 Spalter is the best tool to make moire’s.  This technique is used in the second glazing step.  See also:  oak wood
